Getting Vitamin D in the Winter

With Winter in full swing here in Ohio, we are spending less time outside, and the sun is spending less time peeking through the clouds. Since the sun is our main source of vitamin D, what can we do during the harsh winters of Ohio to get more some vitamin D? Here are some suggestions.

Fatty fish

Fatty fish like tuna, mackerel, and salmon are good for getting a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acid but will also give you some vitamin D to help boost levels. Fish are some of the healthiest foods you can eat. They are relatively light in calories and high in nutrition.

Beef Liver

Beef liver is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. It isn’t one of America’s favorite foods, but the benefits of eating liver go beyond vitamin D. The liver is very nutrient-dense. In addition to vitamin D, you will also find plenty of vitamin B12, vitamin A, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B9 (folate), iron, copper, and choline.

Cheese

Cheeses, especially those using vitamin D fortified milk, are great for intaking essential vitamins and minerals. One of which is vitamin D. Not to mention that cheese is probably the most universally delicious item on this list.

Egg yolks

Even though cholesterol is densest in the yolk of an egg, so is the vitamin D. You may not want to go crazy putting egg yolks in everything, but a reasonable amount of egg yolk should do wonders in keeping your vitamin D levels up.

Vitamin D fortified foods

Especially when looking at dairy products, such as milk and cheese, you will see a lot of products that have been enriched with vitamin D. Do you know why that is? It’s because vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium.
